It's been a while since I have attempted to post anything that remotely resembles a blog post other than long rambling rantings on the HFBoards Canucks forum. Going forward I am going to write short blog posts whenever I get an idea. I will try and keep it short and sweet. Today, Arena locations.
The location of an arena is very important to the financial success of a team. The old saying "If you build they will come" is completely false if applied to arenas and NHL teams. The best teams in the NHL financially all have arenas that are located centrally and have easy access by mass transit and vehicles, as well are surrounded by the infrastructure of restaurants and bars that hockey fans can go to before and after the games.
The location of the arenas of the Arizona Coyotes and Florida Panthers are a huge hinderence to either team ever being able to be financially succesful. These arenas do not allow for any sort of spur of the moment walk up clientel that teams that have arenas closer to the economic centers of the area do. The Capitals are good example of a team that moved to an arena that is more centrally located and easier accessed for the average fan.
The Coyotes and Panthers will have to be re-located if they are going to be financially succesful. This does not mean leaving the market area though. These franchises need to stop trying to make these out of town out of the way arenas work and move to a centrally located arena that is close to the economic center of the market and can be accessed easily by public and private modes of transit.
